Trash & Recycling FAQ

Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) is California’s organic waste recycling legislation. Effective January 1, 2022, all Californians are required to source-separate organic waste from their trash and recycling. Organic waste includes yard waste, food scraps, and food-soiled paper. ​

Yes.

All single-family and multi-family properties with four (4) units or less are required to participate in recycling and organics recycling programs. There are no de minimis or self-haul exceptions for these properties.

Multi-family properties of five (5) units or more – may self-haul their recyclable or organic materials to a certified disposal facility. Proof of disposal, such as a weight ticket, is required to opt into this program.

Commercial properties may qualify for a de minimis or self-haul exception. Properties generating less than 20-gallons of organic materials per week may qualify for an organics de minimis waiver. Additionally, if businesses self-haul their recyclable or organic materials to certified disposal facilities, they may qualify for an exception. Proof of disposal, such as a weigh ticket, is required to opt into this program.

Single family residents may select between 35-gallon, 64-gallon, and 95-gallon carts.

Commercial and multi-family customers may select between 64-gallon and 95-gallon carts, or 2-yard, 3-yard, 4-yard, or 6-yard bins. ​

As part of SB 1383, all containers in the State of California must have the following lid colors by 2036:

• Black lid – Trash
• Blue lid – Recycle
• Green lid – Organics

To comply, during your next scheduled container exchange, WM will be delivering a container with a compliant lid color by 2036. ​

Yes, the City provides a free kitchen caddy for single family residents. Kitchen caddies can be picked up at the City’s Utilities Department at 755 Public Safety Way, Corona, CA 92879. Business hours are Monday - Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Closed Fridays and major holidays.

Supply is limited. ​

Plastic or biodegradable plastic bags cannot be placed in the organics container for collection.

Instead, use these methods to prevent odors and promote cleanliness:

• Place your food scraps in a brown paper bag.
• Layer your food scraps in the organics cart by placing yard waste, preferably grass clippings first, then your food scraps, and lastly additional yard waste.
• Store your food scraps in the freezer and place them in your organics cart the night before your regularly scheduled service. ​

Waste Management (WM) offers bulk item pickups for all customers.

Residential customers may schedule up to three (3) free bulk item pickups per year. Each scheduled pickup may include up to six (6) bulk items, five (5) e-waste items, and up to 15 universal waste items.

Commercial and multi-family customers may schedule a bulk item pickup for an additional fee. Each scheduled pickup may include up to six (6) bulk items and five (5) e-waste items.

Waste Management (WM) offers free curbside collection and recycling of natural, undecorated holiday trees for two weeks starting December 26^th each year. After this period, trees are collected as bulk items.

Please see below for important Christmas tree preparation guidelines:

• Remove a tree stand.
• Cut trees over six (6) feet into smaller sections.
• Flocked trees will not be collected.
• Remove all decorations: ornaments, lights, garlands, tinsel, and flocking.
