A recirculating hot water system uses a by-pass valve that connects the cold and hot water supply lines at the fixture that is farthest away from the water heater. The by-pass valve uses the cold water line as the return loop back to the water heater, continuously recirculating hot water.
Find Leaks – Fix Leaks
Use Your Meter to Find Leaks
Did you know that your water meter can help you find a leak? That’s right! Your meter has a handy leak detection dial to help you identify leaks. Go out to your water meter box and remove the lid. Please use caution as the lid can be heavy. Look at your water meter to find a small dial with a triangle, a red dial, or an arrow. This is your leak indicator! This triangle or small dial spins whenever water is moving through your meter. If everything is off and the dial is moving then that’s a sign you have a leak.
If you do have a leak, check some of the most common places: toilets, pool fill and irrigation valves. For further assistance or information please contact the Water Resources Team at (951) 736-2234.
Check Your Toilet for Leaks
A leaky toilet can waste between 30 to 500 gallons of water per day! Just because it doesn't make a noise or have water at the base doesn't mean that it's not leaking. Here's a simple way to check to see if your toilet is leaking:
- In the toilet tank, remove the lid and place a few drops of food dye or a toilet dye tablet.
- Wait 15 minutes.
- Check the bowl to see if there is color in the bowl. If so, you have a leaky toilet!
- Most of the time, it is a flapper valve not working properly. Replace the flapper valve in the toilet tank.
Landscape Check-Ups
The City of Corona Utilities Department offers customers who are out of budget a free outdoor landscape check-up.

Out of Budget? At your check-up, our experienced technicians can run your irrigation system, point out any problems with the system, make small adjustments as necessary, teach you how to use your irrigation timer to comply with our Stage 2 Watering Guidelines, and offer suggestions for additional water savings.
Free Devices
The City of Corona Utilities Department offers FREE water saving devices to all of our customers. These devices include:

- 5 minute shower timers – Helps to keep you on track to a short shower (5 minutes or less).
- Low-flow showerheads – Low-flow showerheads use 1.5 gallons per minute or less.
- Bathroom/Kitchen faucet aerators – Faucet aerators are devices that add air into the water stream. This can help increase the water pressure through the faucet while decreasing the amount of water coming through.

- Hose nozzles – Automatic shut off nozzles with adjustable settings can help you wash your car or water your yard more efficiently.
- Toilet dye tabs – Use these dye tabs to check for leaks on your toilets. Leaking toilets can waste between 30 to 500 gallons of water each day. A faulty flapper valve is usually the problem — but it's an easy fix.
