PURSUIT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUSPECT LEADS TO SELF INFLICTED GUNSHOT
CORONA, CA– On 5-24-2024 at 8:05 AM, Corona Police officers located an armed and dangerous suspect wanted for stalking, criminal threats, and violation of a domestic violence restraining order around McKinley Street and Griffin Way, Corona. Corona Police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect fled, which led to a vehicle pursuit entering State Route 91 at McKinley Street. The suspect stopped his vehicle for unknown reasons on the 91 westbound east of Lakeview Avenue in Anaheim. Our partners at the Anaheim Police Department assisted us with using their armored rescue vehicle by blocking the front end of the suspect vehicle. Corona Police officers used our armored rescue vehicle to block the rear end of the suspect vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol assisted our officers by closing State Route 91 in both directions and directed motorists behind the stop to exit the freeway. Corona Police Crisis Negotiators began speaking with the suspect via his cell phone for over two hours with the goal of him surrendering peacefully. Our Special Response Team members arrived and assumed command of the incident to contain the suspect. Just before 12:00 P.M., the suspect stopped moving inside his vehicle, and he stopped communicating with us on his phone. Our Special Response Team officers deployed light and sound diversion devices to the outside of his vehicle to gain his attention, but our officers did not see a reaction from him. Special Response Team members approached the vehicle and determined the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers removed the suspect from his vehicle and our on-scene Corona Fire Department Tactical Paramedics assessed him along with Anaheim Fire Paramedics and determined he was deceased. No forced was utilized by any officers at the scene.
The name of the suspect is being withheld pending the notification of his family by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.
