CORONA POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GRANT TO FIGHT ALCOHOL-RELATED HARM

CORONA, CA– The Corona Police Department was selected by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to receive grant funding of $30,500 from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to battle alcohol-related harm in the community.

The goal of the grant is to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors and reduce alcohol-related crime through multiple enforcement, educational, and prevention programs conducted by local law enforcement officers. Programs funded through the grant include Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap operations.

These grants strengthen local law enforcement efforts by combining the talents of local police officers and ABC agents. ABC agents have expertise in alcoholic beverage laws and can help communities reduce alcohol-related harm.

“The program can improve the quality of life in neighborhoods,” said ABC Director Joseph McCullough. “We’ve seen a real difference in the communities where the grant program resources have been invested.”

Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap programs each involve a minor under the supervision of a peace officer, called a minor decoy. The minor decoy goes to an ABC-licensed business and attempts to purchase alcohol from a store clerk or receive it from a patron. If a clerk or patron furnishes alcohol to the minor, they can be cited or arrested and face fines and community service.

If anyone has any questions about the programs utilized or needs information about alcohol-related rules and regulations, please contact Detective Michael Placencia at 951-736-2348 or Michael.Placencia@CoronaCA.gov.
