CORONA POLICE DEPARTMENT TAKES PROACTIVE ACTION ON STATE TRAINING RECOMMENDATIONS
CORONA, CA– Recently, Governor Newsom directed the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) to remove all use of the Carotid Restraint Control Hold from training and a legislative bill eliminating the ability for California law enforcement to use the Carotid Restraint Control Hold is awaiting a hearing in the California Senate. California P.O.S.T. has notified the Corona Police Department that any training or use of any type of carotid control hold will be done so outside of P.O.S.T. certification.
In a continuing effort to review our policies and procedures and conform to California P.O.S.T. training standards, the Corona Police Department has, effective immediately, suspended the use of the Carotid Restraint (C.P.D. Policy Section 300.4) by our officers as a force option until further notice. If the State Legislature eliminates the possibility for police officers to use the carotid restraint in a future hearing, the Corona Police Department will adjust our policy accordingly.
