As Corona considers our next steps, we wanted to update you.
As many may know, the City is in the midst of its annual budget process.
Our budget is more than simply collections of facts and figures, it is a statement of values, none more important than our commitment to public health, safety, and the security of our community. Especially now, the city must continue to ensure our community is prepared for any medical or catastrophic emergency, including making sure our emergency responders have the tools they need to keep us safe.
But these are challenging times. Before the impacts of COVID19, our local community had been grappling with the effects of years of state takeaways of tens of millions of dollars in local funds, and the fiscal effects of the state shifting responsibility for many programs to cities like ours without the necessary funding to provide the services our local residents need.
In our most recent May 12 budget study session, the City laid out its funding projections- including millions of dollars in shortfalls in 2020and beyond. Our next budget session on May 26 will be focused on the services our residents value.
In these unprecedented times, it is clear Corona will need to continue to be self-reliant in sustaining the services and support our residents and local businesses need. Cities our size were left out of stimulus funding and it is clear we must rely on ourselves alone.
That’s why it is so important to hear from you. Please take a moment to review our budget documents and take a moment to add your voice to our Join the Conversation effort. We appreciate the input received from the community to date and look forward to keeping you informed. Thank you for your focus on our community, health, and safety.
