Stay Away from the Santa Ana River due to Potential Dangerous Flows

Post Date:05/10/2019 6:35 PM

7 Oaks Dam water release and weekend weather update:

The release of water from the 7 Oaks Dam that was originally scheduled for May 9th will take place Saturday, May 11th. This release will increase the flow of water in the Santa Ana River. This may create dangerous conditions and everyone is urged to stay away from the river and out of the river bottom area and trails. Rains may intensify to the flow.

The 7 Oaks Dam release will begin at 9 a.m. and reach its maximum flow of 700 cfs (cubic feet per second) by 11 a.m. It will take time for the increased water flow to reach Riverside County and it may arrive rapidly with no advanced indicators. The increased flow from 7 Oaks will continue through May 14th before slowing being reduced over a number of days.

Rains are forecast to continue through the weekend. As with any rain event it is important to stay away from waterways.

Rains are not expected to reach intensities that would cause mud or debris flows in our recent burn scars. Officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and encourage those living near a recent burn area to remain vigilant. Weather conditions can change with little to no notice.
