Diagnosed at ANY AGE – Type 1 Diabetes Awareness

Post Date:11/02/2018 6:30 PM

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month (NDAM). NDAM encompasses all forms of diabetes but the main types are Type 1 and Type 2.  Since Type 2 Diabetes affects 95 percent of the diabetic population, Type 1 Diabetes does not get the awareness it needs. The Corona Fire Department has partnered with EASE T1D to show that a diagnosis can happen at any age regardless of diet and lifestyle.

Type 1 Diabetes (insulin-dependent) is an auto-immune disease. It can occur at any age, but is usually diagnosed from infancy to the late thirties. It was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5 percent of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. With Type 1 Diabetes, a person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin. Although the causes are not entirely known, scientists believe the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas.Type 1 Diabetes Awareness

Contrary to popular belief, Type 1 Diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. It is not preventable, or reversible, and there is currently no cure. Type 1 Diabetes is often mistaken for a flu virus, strep throat, growth spurt, or a urinary tract infection. Knowing the warning signs of Type 1 Diabetes can help save lives.

Local Efforts to Raise Awareness

At the City Council Meeting, on October 17, 2018, Mayor Karen Spiegel declared November as "National Diabetes Awareness Month" and encouraged Corona residents to help improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

The Riverside County Rotary is supporting a regional advertising campaign to raise awareness. Banners will be placed at all seven of Corona Fire Stations as well as local interstate digital billboards throughout November.

About EASE T1D

EASE T1D, a local organization, is the joint effort of two mothers Debbie George and Michelle Thornburg who have children with type 1 diabetes. Through our over 25 years of combined experience, they have come to recognize areas of significant need and have joined forces to apply their knowledge and passion in the effort to “EASE” Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) through education, awareness, support and empowerment.
