Corona ranked in the Top 50 California’s Safest Cities of 2018
SafeWise recently announced the City of Corona as one of the top 50 safest cities in California, coming in at #22 for 2018.
To compile this report, SafeWise reviewed the 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data. SafeWise uses the most up-to-date FBI Crime data as the backbone of their reports. They rely on information that cities across the nation report through the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. SafeWise’ evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, they also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, they calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. Cities that fell below the identified population threshold, or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI, were excluded from the ranking system.
“Public safety is our top priority,” says Chief of Police George Johnstone. “Through strong partnerships with our community members and local businesses the Corona Police Department continually seeks to deliver exceptional service and keep the City of Corona a safe place to live, work, and play.”
SafeWise security analyst Alexia Chianis says, “We were impressed to find California’s fifty safest cities reported an average of just one violent crime for every 1,000 people—that’s 80% lower than the US average, according to the most recent FBI crime report. Property crime rates were also quite low, with well over half of the cities reporting fewer than twenty crimes of this type per 1,000 people.”
