ABC GRANT COMPLETION YIELDS 38 ARRESTS
CORONA, CA – In July of 2017, the Corona Police Department received a grant in the amount of $54,175 from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to conduct various operations and inspections at ABC licensed establishments. The purpose of this grant was to reduce the ability for minors to obtain alcohol, and to reduce the amount of alcohol related crimes at these ABC licensed establishments.
Since July 2017, 27 operations and inspections have been conducted at ABC licensed establishments. Operations ranged from the use of minors to attempt to purchase alcohol from local bars, restaurants, liquor stores, and gas stations to undercover operations aimed at reducing crimes at ABC licensed premises. In addition, increased staffing was utilized for DUI enforcement.
During these operations, decoys (minors) entered a total of 59 ABC licensed establishments and attempted to purchase alcohol. Of these 59 locations, a total of nine establishments furnished an alcoholic beverage to the decoy. The decoys also contacted 183 patrons in front of liquor stores and convenience stores asking them to purchase alcohol on their behalf. A total of 11 adults purchased alcohol and knowingly furnished it to the minor decoy.
As a result of three additional undercover operations, undercover ABC Agents, working with Corona Police investigators were able to purchase cocaine from patrons at the Corona Depot Bar located at 150 Depot Drive. This investigation resulted in the seizure of multiple ounces of cocaine and evidence related to the sales of narcotics.
During the grant period, roll call trainings were also provided to officers regarding alcohol related issues and current ABC guidelines.
The grant was highly successful and yielded a total of 38 arrests for various violations including sales of alcohol to minors, driving under the influence of alcohol, and possession of narcotics for sales. Due to the success of investigative operations during the 2017-2018 grant period, the Corona Police Department is anticipating an additional grant for 2018-2019.
