PACKAGE THEFT SUSPECT ARRESTED

CORONA, CA— On Tuesday, March 20, 2018 Corona Police officers arrested 23 year-old Jimmy Nguyen, a Riverside resident, for stealing packages from the porches of homes during recent theft incidents that were caught on camera and posted on social media.

At about 11:40 a.m., an alert citizen called the Corona Police Department after noticing a suspicious car in a neighborhood near Mountain Gate Park. The car had been recorded on home surveillance video in connection with a package theft that was highlighted on social media platforms late last week. The citizen spoke with the dispatch center while watching the vehicle, reporting that the driver of the car appeared to be following a delivery vehicle through a neighborhood.

Thanks to the continuing observations of the witness, officers located and stopped the suspect in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Foothill Parkway. The driver and sole occupant of the car, Jimmy Nguyen, was detained. A search of his car led to the discovery of empty packaging from an earlier package theft. Nguyen was arrested and booked at the Corona Police Department for the charge of mail theft. As the investigation continued, Nguyen was linked to several other package thefts in the City of Corona. Investigators have recovered some of the stolen property and are working to return the items to their rightful owners. Nguyen was later released from custody with a notice to appear. Additional mail theft charges are pending.

This case was solved quickly due to the victim posting video of the incident on social media and an alert neighbor calling police after seeing the suspect vehicle less than a week after the original theft. The Corona Police Department sincerely appreciates the community’s support as we carry out our mission to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.
